The Steinberger ST2FPA is a personal favorite of mine because of it's versatility and playability. Not only does it perform like no other instrument can, the ST2FPA Transcale system performs transposing transitions easily. The ST2FPA is great for traveling because of the sound small body size, but don't be fooled the Steinberger sound scream's with the best. With three pickups including the piezo, the ST2FPA is a great match for any type of electric guitar player. Down side? Unfortunatly, I'm going to have to give Steinberger a few bads raps when it comes to quality. I've recieved way to many of these guitars with small factory defects like chips along the edges of the varnish etc. and even the occasional seriouse problem like a unproperly wired ZT3. Bummer, but not a actual isse. Steinberger (Gibson) will fix it without a problem, no questions asked. I give this on a 8 out of 10 Playability 10 Quality 6 design 9 Sound 8 Transcale System 10

I hear what you're saying - Gibson quality control could be better - but I've had no real issues with my ST-2FPA. A careful application of WD-40 silicone lubricant to the sliding capo channels and transposing scales was quick and easy. Paint finish is fine. Impartiality aside, it's all relative to price and I've no complaints regarding value for money.

By "Impartiality aside", you mean you don't want to seem to be trying too hard to appear impartial? Why don't you just admit you're "partial"!

I would suggest buyers think about paying extra and having it shipped in the special hard-case instead of the standard gig bag to protect it in transit. That way, mine arrived pristine after traveling half way around the world.

On that passing reference to the ZT-3 in the opening thread, Ned Steinberger's set-up video indicates the transposing mechanism involves a gear-shift-type operation. I'm wondering if it's any quicker at changing tuning for easier chord shapes "on-the-fly" than the ST-2FPA. Anybody?

The ZT-3 video and Ned's set-up tutorial seems to indicate transposing would be quicker than the ST-2FPA but not immediate. That breakthrough is yet to come?

Meanwhile, I'm happy just borrowing your ST-2FPA.

It's been sold, I'm sorry to say - to a very appreciative buyer. Sorry to see it go but it had nothing to do with its features, finish, sound or versatility which I was very happy with. The motivation for the sale was purely financial. I have since recommended Steinberger Synapses, both ST-2FPA Transcale baritone guitar and XS-1FPA bass to all who will listen. In fact, the latter 4-string bass is on my future-acquisition list, finances permitting.
